Some chronographs impress because of their specifications. Others simply make you want to put them on, press the pushers and enjoy the machinery. The Vesuviate Attivo-Chrono manages to do both.
Its 39mm square case gives the watch an immediately recognisable presence without becoming oversized or theatrical. The rounded corners, broad integrated bracelet and twin-register dial create a design that feels distinctly contemporary, while the mechanical chronograph at its heart brings something wonderfully traditional to the experience.
Inside is the Sea-Gull ST-1940 automatic column-wheel chronograph movement. Start the chronograph and the central seconds hand sweeps into life; stop it, reset it, watch the mechanism respond. Turn the watch over and the movement remains part of the experience, visible through the sapphire exhibition back beneath Vesuviate's custom hollowed gilt rotor.
There is substance behind the design too. The 316L stainless-steel case and bracelet are surface hardened to approximately 1,100 HV for considerably greater resistance to everyday wear, while sapphire crystal front and back and 100 metres of water resistance make this a chronograph intended to be enjoyed rather than protected from life.
The colours give each version a very different character — from Black and Maroon Brown to Pale Yellow, Pastel Blue and Salmon, alongside the striking White Full-Lume edition. Serious mechanics do not have to mean a serious-looking watch.
Why buy it?
Because mechanical chronographs this distinctive are difficult to find at this level. The Attivo-Chrono combines the pleasure of an automatic column-wheel chronograph with an unusual 39mm case, sapphire front and back, hardened stainless steel and genuine everyday practicality.
