The Sincrono Perspective

Brown is not the first colour most people associate with a professional diving watch.

That is precisely why the WRX Riviera Brown has aged so well.

When RALF TECH introduced the Riviera editions in 2014, the Brown was intended to evoke the warm rocks of the Mediterranean coastline rather than the sea itself. It gave the enormous WRX an unexpectedly elegant, almost earthy personality.

I particularly like how completely RALF TECH committed to the idea.

Brown dial. Brown bezel. Brown Barenia leather. Even the second silicone strap is brown.

It could easily have been too much.

Instead, against the satin steel case, it feels remarkably coherent.

Then there is what sits underneath.

The RTA001 automatic movement, based on the ETA 2824-2 architecture, belongs to an earlier mechanical generation of RALF TECH, while 500 metres of water resistance reminds you that the Riviera name never compromised the WRX’s professional credentials.

And now there is history too.

Five hundred pieces were produced in 2014.

More than a decade later, RALF TECH places the remaining unworn examples within its N.O.S. collection — watches from past collections preserved new, intact and unworn.

That makes finding one today rather different from buying a newly announced limited edition.

For me, the Riviera Brown is one of those older WRX models that becomes more interesting with time: unusual when it was launched, distinctive today, and increasingly difficult to encounter exactly as it left RALF TECH.
