RALF TECH Academie Automatic Aero 41mm
Aviation watches often trade heavily in nostalgia. The Aero has the good sense not to.
RALF TECH takes the classical proportions of the Académie and introduces the clarity and purpose of an aviation instrument, drawing on the brand's aerospace experience and links with the French Air Force.
The result is wonderfully restrained.
A 41mm satin-finished steel case surrounds a 95% matte black dial, with crisp BGW9 Super-LumiNova® hands and indices providing excellent contrast. There is no date to disturb the symmetry, while the thick glassbox sapphire introduces just enough vintage character without turning the Aero into a reproduction of something from the past.
And beneath that elegant exterior lies considerably more capability than appearances suggest.
The automatic RTA003 movement provides up to 44 hours of power reserve, while a screw-down crown and caseback deliver a substantial 200 metres of water resistance. A hand-sewn vintage black calfskin strap is joined by a black Tropic silicone strap for more active use.
Only 100 examples will be produced.
Why buy it?
Because the Aero gets the balance right.
It has enough aviation character to feel purposeful, but not so much that you need a flying jacket to justify wearing it.
The satin steel, matte dial and luminous markings give it the clarity of an instrument; the rounded case and glassbox sapphire give it something much rarer — charm.
And that 200-metre water resistance means the elegance is not something you need to protect.
