Some watches look better when they are immaculate.
Others seem to be waiting for their first scratch.
 
The Out Of Order Supervintage Chrono belongs to neither camp. It arrives with the spirit of a watch that already has somewhere to go.
Its world is unmistakably 1970s: racing chronographs, leather driving gloves, sun-bleached dashboards, petrol stations somewhere far from home and those wonderfully optimistic colours that belonged to an era when watches were designed with rather more courage than restraint.
Yet the Supervintage Chrono is not simply an exercise in nostalgia.
Its story is also part of Out Of Order itself.
 
In 2014, only a year after the Italian brand began its journey, OOO introduced its first chronograph. Ten years later, the company returned to that early chapter and reconsidered it from the ground up. The Supervintage Chrono keeps the connection alive — including the Italian-made vegetable-tanned leather straps that echo the original — but places it within a more mature, more sophisticated and distinctly 1970s-inspired design.
 
The result is a substantial 42mm chronograph with beautifully shaped lugs, contrasting polished and brushed surfaces, a tachymeter bezel and a three-register dial that immediately evokes the great sporting chronographs of the period.
Inside, however, OOO has made a very pragmatic decision.
The Japanese Seiko VK63 meca-quartz chronograph movement combines quartz accuracy and reliability with something much closer to the physical pleasure of a traditional mechanical chronograph. Press the pusher and the central chronograph seconds hand starts with purpose; stop it and reset it, and the hand snaps rapidly back to zero.
It gives you much of the tactile enjoyment of operating a mechanical chronograph without asking you to treat the watch as a delicate historical object.
And that feels exactly right here.
With 100 metres of water resistance, screw-down crown, screw-down chronograph pushers and a solid screw-down case back, this is a vintage-flavoured chronograph designed for contemporary life.
Then there are the colours.
Golden Shadow is the extrovert: warm gold across the dial against a black tachymeter bezel, paired with hand-stitched tan Italian leather. It feels like sunlight, old racing machinery and the interior of a beautifully aged grand tourer.
Safari Bronze takes the Supervintage philosophy furthest. Its green dial, contrasting light tachymeter bezel and Out Of Order's distinctive Ultra Distressed treatment create the impression of a watch that has already travelled before you have even fastened it to your wrist.
Night Ops changes the atmosphere completely. Black PVD steel, black dial and black tachymeter bezel turn the same architecture darker and more purposeful — less Mediterranean afternoon, more midnight departure.
And Desert Rose brings unexpected warmth to the collection, with rose-gold detailing and matching dial tones against a black tachymeter bezel. Vintage in inspiration, certainly, but far from predictable.
Four watches.
Four completely different moods.
The common thread is not perfection.
It is character.
 
Why buy it?
Because there is a difference between owning a watch that looks old and owning one that makes you want to create some stories of your own.
That is where the Supervintage Chrono works.
OOO has taken the language of the 1970s — racing dials, tachymeter bezels, bold colours and hand-finished Italian leather — without creating something that needs to be treated like a museum piece.
 
The Seiko VK63 meca-quartz movement is accurate, robust and wonderfully satisfying to operate. The 100-metre water resistance means you can wear it without constantly thinking about what might happen to it. And at 42mm, it has enough presence to make its personality felt.
Then there is Out Of Order's particular attitude to ageing.
Especially in Safari Bronze, the brand's Damaged in Italy philosophy turns wear into part of the design rather than something to fear. It reflects the very idea on which OOO was founded: that some objects become more interesting when life leaves its marks upon them.
That makes the Supervintage Chrono unusually easy to understand.

Because perhaps the best vintage watch is not necessarily the one that has inherited somebody else's memories.
